Transcript of the interview

A sudden change of plans at Bazaar HQ in Dubai and less than 24 hours later I find myself making my way down the infamous palm-leaf emblazoned corridor of LA's iconic Berverly Hills Hotel, just moments away from meeting teen icon and bona fide A-list actor Robert Pattinson.

Best known for his leading role in The Twilight Saga, a series of films based on Stephenie Meyer's vampire-romance novels, the British actor became a household name - and heartthrob - overnight as the films netted billions of Dirhams at the box office.

Unfortunately for me, all five films have eluded my cinematic escapades of recent years, however the tabloid hysteria that surrounds the cast has not. Robert's on-screen/off-screen, on-again/off-again romance with his co-star Kristen Stewart has been played out in the media since Twilight first hit the big screen in 2008. As I draw closer to the door of his hotel suite, I find my mind irrationally wondering whether I'll be "Team Rob" or "Team Taylor" (actor Taylor Lautner plays Robert's love rival in the films) - the big debate ammongst Twilight fans the world over and a choice I cannot make with any sort of conviction. I take a deep breath and enter the room.

Fortunately, my vampire shortcomings don't matter all that much today for I am meeting Robert to talk about his new role as the face of Dior Homme. The advertising campaign, which launches this month, sees sultry images of the actor shot by American artist Nan Goldin in New York. There's also a short film in which Robert assumes a rock'n'roll alpha male character in a raw and self-destructibe relationship with free-spirited French model Camille Rowe.

"It's kind of, sort of, a like fantasy version I have of myself," Robert states cautiously, when I ask about his latest character. "I mean, I'm not like that on everyday basis, I think I am a little bit more boring," he laughs, his British accent glazed with just a hint of LA.

In spite of his massive fame, the 27-year-old is disarmingly unguarded and relaxed, puffing on an eletric cigarette. He is wearing a charcoal grey jumper, loose jeans and a cap turned backwards - "it's the same outfit I wore yesterday," he volunteers. He is unshaven with a touch of stubble masking his chiseled jawbone, and suddenly I understand what all the fuss is about. He is also, of course, doused in Dior's scent. "I think I have about three different Dior Homme fragances on," he chuckles, warning me, in case I start down a scientific track, "I am not very good with the nasal questions." In fact, it seems Robert is just as much out of his comfort zone talking about fragance as I am discussing vampires. Not surprising really as this is the actor's first endorsement since he first arrived of the scene playing Cedric Diggory in the fourth Harry Potter film in 2005 before being propelled into mega-stardom as Edward Cullen in Twilight.

"Dior is very independent, there's nothing tacky about it at all," he says of his decision to represent the French fashion house. "I actually felt like it was benefitting me to be associated with them rather than doing something just for the sake of it." For the campaign's commercial, Robert hand-picked French independent film director Romain Gavras for the task. "I'd seen his movie Our Day Will Come and tried to meet him for like a year and just did not return my phone calls... Ever!" he laughs. "so I thought if I did the Dior thing I bet I could get him on board." He was right. And when I spoke with the charismatic Romain earlier in the day, he was equally complimentary about Robert. "You always have a fear with big stars like him that they are crazy and uncontrollable, or collect swords," he jokes, "but from the start Robert was really down to earth."

In the film Robert looks every inch of the leading man, embodying a nonchalant, caution-to-the-wind attitude as he runs around New York gate-crashing parties, joy-riding on the beach and getting steamy in bedroom scenes with Camille. "He has such a strong image in his previous films, this commercial was about giving him a different kind of iconic look," explains Romain. Robert agrees, "I kept saying from the beginning I wanted to be really physical. I have done quite a few films in a row where it is all about stillness," he explains referring not only to the Twilight saga, but also to films such as Water For Elephants in which he starred alongside Reese Witherspoon, and more recently his performance in David Cronenberg's sci-fi flick, Cosmopolis. "I was watching the Dior scenes back in the monitor and thinking I look older now. I have always been so self-conscious about looking like a little kid and people not really believing me, so I wanted to do a film about masculinity and this was kid of the perfect opportunity."

It's the transition from boy to man that Robert keeps referring back to as he talks, in between draws on his eletric cigarette, and I wonder whether this feeling has anything to do with the ending of the Twilight series and his relationship with co-star Kristen Stewart. "Yeah, it's a whole bunch of stuff happening at the same time and I am just not worrying about things so much. I guess it just happens," he muses. "I also bought a house and I was literally doing that up and fixing pipes," he quips, laughing at the absurdity of him doing handy-work.

I am surprised at hor honest the star is (he answers every question I ask truthfully, as if it were a compulsion) given his personal life has been paparazzo fodder for the last five years. Today speculation centres round who he is dating. Most recently he has been linked to actress and granddaughter of Elvis Presley, Riley Keough, as well as songstress Katy Perry. "It's that thing... Someone knowing who they are, it's the best," he answers coyly when asked what attracts his interest in a woman. "I guess because it is like the opposite of what I am - I am so all over the place," he adds with his signature self-effacing humour.

The same goes for a woman's style, according to Robert. "If someone looks good in ther clothes it's because they are comfortable in their own skin - it's literally just like owning it. Oh no! That is so lame, I feel like I am on Project Runway saying 'own that'," he jokes, complete with Tim Gunn accent.

Of course, the epitome of his carefree ideal is fellow Brit Kate Moss, Robert's pin-up of choice as a teenager. "I was obsessed with her, it was a bit ridiculous. The other poster I had up was Linda Blair in the Exorcist, so they were my two options - a little girl posessed and Kate Moss," he laughs.

But, as it turns out, Robert's knowledge and passion for fashion extends further than just posters of Kate Moss and Dior Homme fragances. "I kind of want to get more involved with the industry, I really like it," he says. "I like the speed of it, you can just move so much quicker. I also like designing clothes. It's weird, it's kind of a new thing that I have started doing," he reveals. As I probe him on his design ambitions, I expect the typical actor-turned-designer response of a T-shirt or baseball cap line and am, I admit, a little taken aback by his actual answer. "It's really embarrassing," he blushes taking a deep breath as I lean in closer, "I like drawing couture dresses." It's as if he is admitting this out loud for the first time. "It's bizarre! I started doing it and I was like 'what is happening?' Suddenly I had like a sketchbook full of dresses. I like the sort of artistry of it, it's kid of like costume design," Robert divulges. So can we expect to see him showcasing his designs at Paris fashion week in the future? "That would be the most random thing ever but I actually really want to do it. I don't know though, it could be incredibly embarrassing."

Clealy Robert is someone who excels at the arts, whether it's acting, music (he plays the piano and a guitar, as well as writing and singing his own music) or indeed designing. Far less exciting for the actor, however, is exercise. "I think I don't get some jobs because I don't go to the gym. I am literally the only actor in LA who doesn't have a six pack," he laughs. "Although I am going to have to change that. In my next film I have like three intimate scenes so I am literally thinking of those to get in shape." I ask him whether he has hit LA's Runyon Canyon, the place where half of Hollywood goes hiking every weekend. "No, I don't ever want anyone to see me doing exercise," he says aghast. "Even though I am doing it, I still think it's so lame and embarrassing - I am doing it out of necessity, that's all,"

What I find most charming about Robert is that he seems unaware of just how 'big' he is in Hollywood. In fact, he has a rare ability to make you feel as if you are kicking back and shooting the breeze with one of your friends rather thant one of Hollywood's most watched and wanted actors. While he slowly makes his peace with his star statys, there's one part of the A-list territory that he still can't quite get to grips with. "I am very anti-paparazzi, but I guess you kind of get used to thing. In fact I just started getting better at hiding," he laughs. "As soon as you figure out a way to live where people don't follow you around, stress levels go down."

That Robert is not into the fame aspect of Hollywood - "it's not really me so I have never really felt attached to it" - allows him to be more creative in his film choices. It's a very interesting career move that he is making," Romain says of Robert. "At some point, you either have to stay in your comfort zone and keep doing movies, or you get the courage and to go out and do mre interesting things like the Cronenberg film." And the actor seems equally happy about the direction his career is headed. "It's an amazing job, especially if you don't let yourself go crazy, but there are loads of jobs that make you go crazy," he says candidly.

It is this endearing modesty and off-the-cuff sense of humour peppered with British charm, as well as his driven acting aspirations, that make Robert so much more than just as teen star. As of now, he's clocking up actor, perfume model, musician ad you read it here first, couture designer. With or without the six pack, I can now safely say, I am very much "Team Rob".

Photographer Nan Goldin Talks About Rob and the Dior Homme Campaign

Posted on 07:12 by Unknown

Google Translate (and some help from @Pattinson_AW :))

A body floating in the turquoise water of a pool, the face of a young man whose features still teenagers. A raw, intimate light that stirs the sensuality of the flesh. It is Nan Goldin. And if it weren't for the exceptional celebrity model, nothing in this picture - or in the other pictures that composed the series from which it is extracted - would not denote with the previous work of the American photographer. However, Robert Pattinson, the model we are talking about, is not really part of the elective family of Nan Goldin.

Neither clueless nor underground, the hero of Twilight had never met the artist before this project orchestrated by Dior, of which he is the new face for the Dior Homme fragrance. And without doubt, the photographer, a follower of the cinema of Antonioni and Fassbinder had never heard of him. But the alchemy worked: "I haven't seen his vampire movies, because they're not my style", says Nan Goldin with her hoarse timbre. "What interests me about him is his person. Robert is a lovely boy, so sweet , loves to play guitar. Music is his natural element, probably more than cinema."

With this series, the photographer wanted to reflect the grace of a young man. "One of the starting points was the portrait of the artist painter Paul Cadmus by Luigi Lucioni [1928] (image at the bottom of the post) exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum. Same brown hair, same blue eyes, Robert has something of this boy." Hundreds of fans were waiting around places of the shooting in New York, but the photographer has no recollection : "I didn't see anyone, but I think I heard about it."

WHAT IT GIVES TO SEE ROBERT PATTINSON is not his celebrity status - he spent most of his life trying to hide - nor his glamor image of the hero of a people culture of which he is totally foreign. Nan Goldin searched in the actor what she has always highlighted in her models: youth, the sexual body and the expression of an individual destiny.

"For the first time, I looked back, I plunged back into my archives, which I never do because I don't want to repeat myself, or plagiarize myself. And I found in The Ballad of Sexual Dependency [her most famous work, a slideshow of 800 photos between autobiography and documentary, shown for the first time in 1987 at the Rencontres d'Arles] an image that I wanted to inspire me: French Chris on the Convertible [1979] (image at the bottom of the post). I wanted to find the same virginity, this same grace." So, for this command, Nan Goldin - whose last exhibition Scopophilia, date 2011 - is back to work . "As did Diane Arbus before me - be careful, don't say that I compare myself to her - I would like to make a book of my fashion photos, these images have long been despised by museums." In her London studio the artist completes a box. A mystery object that contains the series "Robert Pattinson" edited by Dior, in limited edition and will be sold in art places late November. "I'm happy with this project" concludes Nan Goldin wearily . "So much has happened since this morning. It is 7pm and I still haven't had breakfast..."

ETA: Amazon UK has listed a Coffret Robert Pattinson-1000 Lives by Nan Goldin. We don't know more details about what that is for now, but here's a pre-order link for those interested.

Rob in GQ UK - New Interview

Posted on 05:50 by Unknown

Transcript
Until now, Robert Pattinson has never endorsed a brand in his life. The Twilight star could have boosted his earnings with lucrative contracts but chose not to. It's Wednesday 12 June 2013 and that's set to change. We're at Soho House in West Hollywood for the world premiere of the new Dior Homme campaign and Pattinson is the face. Set to Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love' and directed by Romain Gavras, 1000 Lives is a moody one-minute film following a love-struck couple across New York - and a long way from Edward and Bella.

Dressed in a blue two-button Dior Homme suit and black T-shirt, Pattinson opens up about his first signing. "I was reticent about doing commercials," he confesses. "I'm always very hesitant to work with big companies." To convince him, Dior gave Pattinson free rein on the project from the concept to execution. "Romain was my first choice from the beginning," he says. "I had no idea what to expect going into it; we were just making stuff up. I'd never worked like that before."

Gavras' idea was to turn the perfume ad archetype - "a guy with lots of chicks driving expensive cars" - on its head. So there's a beaten up BMW - which Pattinson crashed on the first day - and a single love interest: model-turned-actor Camille Rowe. According to Pattinson the story line sees two people in a "self-destructive" relationship, like "magnets that repel each other but for a brief second manage to touch - something that shouldn't have happened", leaving us to ponder, post Kristen Stewart, whether he drew inspiration from his own experience.

At 27, Pattinson is clearly breaking free of his teen-vampire beginnings: "It was a strange period to be shooting; it was one of the first times I felt like an adult." Reflecting on the campaign Pattinson reveals, "I'm quite attached to it now. It seems honest, maybe because it was fun making it. It didn't feel like we were doing a commercial. Even watching it I don't feel like I'm trying to sell anything." Which bring us back to why Dior hired him: to sell fragance. So what was his first? "My aunt gave me L'Eau D'Issey when I was 12 - the same summer I discovered hair gel. I thought I was super classy,"

Rob To Star as Dennis Stock in Anton Corbijn’s 'Life'

Posted on 14:20 by Unknown

From Screendaily
Robert Pattinson will star as Magnum photographer Dennis Stock and Dane DeHaan will play James Dean in Anton Corbijn’s Life. FilmNation handles international sales and will introduce the script to buyers in Toronto.

See-Saw Films’ Iain Canning and Emile Sherman produce with Christina Piovesan of First Generation Films, marking a post-The King’s Speech reunion between See-Saw and FilmNation. CAA holds US rights.

Luke Davies wrote the screenplay to Life, which chronicles the friendship that ensued when the straight-laced Stock embarked on a road trip with Dean in 1955 for a Life magazine commission.

Filming is scheduled to commence production in February 2014 on location in Canada.

“As an internationally celebrated photographer, Anton Corbijn is the perfect filmmaker to direct Life,” said Canning and Sherman. “Finding the right actor to play James Dean was a big responsibility, but Dane’s body of work has proved what a chameleon he is and what he will contribute to the role.

“Casting Robert Pattinson and Dane DeHaan brings together two of the most exciting young actors of their generation.”

“We were fortunate to work with Anton on A Most Wanted Man and are thrilled to be a part of his next film,” said FilmNation CEO Glen Basner. “His incredible talent combined with the chemistry between Dane and Robert will bring to life the fascinating story of the fast friendship formed at a very pivotal time in Dean’s life.

“The project also marks our re-teaming with See-Saw Films whose impressive track record continuously keeps them a top-player in international film production.”

Pattinson will next be see in David Michôd’s The Rover and starred in David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis as well as the Twilight franchise. He recently wrapped on Cronenberg’s Maps To The Stars.

DeHaan broke out in the sci-fi hit Chronicle and also stars in Toronto entries Devil’s Knot, Metallica Through The Never and Kill Your Darlings. His credits include The Place Beyond The Pines.

From The Film Stage
First revealed earlier this summer, Life is a period piece whose drama is deeply rooted in the intertwining worlds of fame and photography, something the helmer is remarkably familiar with. As scripted by Luke Davies, its action centers on the relationship between James Dean and Life Magazine‘s Dennis Stock, the latter of whom had been tasked with capturing the up-and-coming actor less than a year before his rise to stardom and tragic death.

We’ve now got news from Screen Daily who will take the parts, as Robert Pattinson has signed on for Stock and Dane DeHaan will step into the iconic shoes of Dean. Production is already set for this February in Canada, where we will follow the duo on a road trip. This is another addition to Pattinson’s promising slate of films coming up, with David Michôd’s The Rover and David Cronenberg‘s Maps to the Stars, while DeHaan will be see in Kill Your Darlings and Metallica Through the Never this fall, ahead of his major turn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

From The Hollywood Reporter
Robert Pattinson and Dane DeHaan are teaming up to star in Life, the true story about the friendship between James Dean and Life magazine photographer Dennis Stock.

DeHaan will bring Dean to life while Pattinson will portray Stock in the movie being directed by Anton Corbijn.

Iain Canning, who produced the Oscar-winning drama The King's Speech and the acclaimed Michael Fassbender drama Shame, is producing Life with his See-Saw Films partner, Emile Sherman.

Stock was a young photographer working for the Magnum agency when he received an assignment that changed his life: to shoot a free-spirited actor named James Dean.

The gig became a personal journey for both as they traveled from L.A. to New York to Indiana. During the trip, Stock captured now-iconic images of the actor before he was launched to stardom with East of Eden (1955).

The movie, with a script by Luke Davies and a budget in the $10 million to $15 million range, is eyeing a shoot in early 2014.

Pattinson (WME, 3 Arts Entertainment, Sloane Offer) recently wrapped David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars as well as The Rover, the futuristic thriller that also stars Guy Pearce.

DeHaan’s career has exploded since his breakthrough in the found-footage sci-fi movie Chronicle. He has The Devil’s Knot, directed by Atom Egoyan, premiering in Toronto, and will also appear as Harry Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

You can find some of the pictures of James Dean taken by Dennis Stock at Life.com.

From Life.com's article about Dean (mentions Stock)
In his wonderful 2005 book James Dean: Fifty Years Ago, Stock writes of trying to get the rapidly rising actor, whom he barely knew, to agree to let the photographer chronicle Dean’s return to both New York and Indiana from his new home in Los Angeles.

“The story, as I explained it [to Jimmy],” Stock wrote, “was to reveal the environments that affected and shaped the unique character of James Byron Dean. We felt a trip to his hometown, Fairmount, Indiana, and to New York, the place of his professional beginnings, would best reveal those influences…. I would solicit an assignment guarantee to cover expenses. The obvious magazine to approach was LIFE…. It took only a week for LIFE to approve the assignment.”

The photographs that Stock produced during his time with Dean captured an introspective, intensely self-analyzing (and occasionally self-absorbed) artist — albeit one who could, at times, also be self-deprecating almost to the point of parody.

LIFE, meanwhile, ran a number of the pictures in its March 7, 1955, issue, under the headline, “Moody New Star.” East of Eden was about to open, and would make Dean a household name. Less than six months later, mere weeks before the release of Rebel Without a Cause, the phenomenally talented, category-defying actor would be dead — and would pass into legend.
