Enough of vampires, werewolves and sugary romances. The british actor Robert Pattinson, who earned worldwide fame and millions of dollars to star in the five instalments of The Twilight Saga is completely redirecting his career to more dense and original projects. His most recent choices have been critically acclaimed, as are his performances.

The starting point of this transition was the movie Cosmopolis, by David Cronenberg, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012. In this talkie film, he plays Eric Packer, an expert in the world of finances, who spends his time inside a limo, receiving unusual visitors, whilst a major crisis erupts outside the car.

Bel Ami (which premiered in Brazil in 2012), based on the work of Guy de Maupassant, starring Uma Thruman; Mission: Blacklist (in pre-production), where he plays a soldier who helps in the hunt of Saddam Hussein; and The Rover (shot this year), where he portrays a mentally disturbed man, are other great examples of the actor's current phase. Last july he started filming a new movie with Cronenberg, Maps To The Stars, a mixture of drama and black humor, inspired by society's obsession with the celebrity industry.

And the news don't stop there: The boy who started doing theater at 15 years old, in Barnes Theatre Company, and had a brief modelling career is the new face of the fragrance Dior Homme. To represent such an important brand and be able to work with partners he admire (the photographer Nan Goldin and filmmaker Romain Gavras) were the necessary fuel he needed to jump on this "wild" adventure, in his own words, inspired by James Dean's quote: "Dream as you'll live forever. Live as you'll die today." Check out the interview:

After Twilight, your career has been going through lots of transformations. How's this transition going?
I just turned 27 and only now I'm realizing no one looks at me like I'm a kid anymore. Being an actor is weird, and the idea of success changes through the years. But there's the good side of fame as well: I don't have to work just for the money. So now I'm trying to use my time, my energy and my influences to make interesting choices no one else is making. Indeed, there's something about Dior's work that is very similar to my current state of being: an almost agressive independence!

The partnership with Cronenberg seems to be going really well.
I had such a good experience in Cosmopolis! David is an incredible person, and the most fun, intriguing man to work with I've ever met. He has been making movies for the last 40 years, and every film he makes shows just how unusual he is. We started shooting his new movie recently. It's called Maps To The Stars, with Julianne Moore and John Cusack. The scripts of these two films are amongst the most original ones I've ever read, that's why I hope to continue working with him forever.

You just closed the partnership with Dior. Was the invite for the campaign a surprise?
When Dior contacted me, I was truly shocked at first because their name alone is almost mythical. It's a very sofisticated fashion house, that never compromises their image. They approached me in the right way and at the right time because Twilight was coming to an end. I remember I was impressed when I met with the creative team and saw that they had an extremely open mind. Their interest was in an artistic collaboration, more than the commercial itself.

Why did you choose Romain Gavras to direct Dior's film?
I've wanted to work with him for a long time. To be honest, I tried to get in contact with him for about a year. He used to be like: "I'm not going to talk to you". Until I told him that I wanted him to direct Dior's commercial. That's when he finally met me! (laughs) He has a visual language completely different from everything I've seen before.

And how was the job?
Romain made it happen! We were driving along a beach in a tiny BMW and there were 6 meters of sand. If I slowed down, the car was going to sink, so, we were going at 90 miles/hour with a camera in the car. The car was skidding a lot and there were three models inside of it, for whom I was responsible. All I know is that after about 2 hours the car got in the water and the bumper fell off. It was wild!

Do you think that perfume is essencial to all men?
When I was 12 and started talking more to girls, I used to think that wearing perfume was the right thing to do. I remember being on vacation in Portugal and watching teenagers going inside bars. I used to think that if I smelled like perfume I was going to convince everyone that I was an adult. And the worst thing is that it worked! Perfume and hair gel were my best friends that summer! (laughs)

How do you spend your free time?
I'm so boring! I spend all day on the Internet looking at what young directors are doing. Right now, I'm also trying to develop a script with a friend.

We know that you are a musician and plays guitar. Do you have any musical project?
I still play guitar and I really have been rehearsing a lot more now than I used to. But I really don't play on a concert or anything like that for years.

Is there a life after Twilight? That's the question the actor is trying to answer to, filming in art-house cinema and working with Dior.

"The most important thing is to be cool". After 5 years spent in the eye of the Hollywood cyclone, Robert Pattinson finally got it. It did not appear to him like this while walking his dog in Los Angeles. We always sensed a sort of uneasiness when talking to him. And even Robert himslef had some trouble hiding (maybe he's not really trying) that he wasn't really fit for the movies he was idolized for. "Playing in movies that you would never go see, it complicates things, it's hard to talk about it, hard to promote it, hard to connect with the public. Until I met David Cronenberg who hired me for Cosmopolis, I always felt like I just fell into roles, that I didn't really get to choose. I was trying not to sink. For the first time, I felt like I had been chosen for my talent. David gave me confidence. It changed how I see myself as an actor."

Not the best moment to become the face of an important perfume brand, lend his face (for a lot of money) to Dior Homme and see his image on every billboards around the world? Well, not really. Of course, Dior is not the first to solicit Rob Patz. Before, others certainly thought about making money off of the huge popularity of the Twilight actor. But it seems like the honorable French house found the right words to convince him. Well, more like the right word : freedom. Pattinson used it to realize his dream : shooting with Romain Gravas, a French underground and talented director who alternated between the super cool (the music video "Bad Girls" with M.I.A) and the super controversial (the music video "Stress" with Justice). "It's been a while since I have been trying to contact him and he wasn't answering my calls. When Dior approached me, I told myself "I'm sure he would like to work with me if I was offering a Dior commercial"". Bingo! Gavras accepted the challenge and restored the actor's image looking for an artistic legitimacy while helping Dior building a successful campaign.

The movie he directed is indeed a champagne bobble, a concentrate of coolness with sixties influence in which Rob and model Camille Rowe are being playful, smoke cigarettes, drive carelessly an old BMW convertible on the beach... A very New Wave atmosphere, seductive and fresh. Like a groupie, the actor expresses his admiration for Gravas the anarchist : "He sees the world in a complete different way. he's very confident. I am more neurotic, it's irritating but at the same time, my insecurity is the only thing I find interesting about myself".

Let it be clear, with Robert Pattinson, there's a significant misunderstanding. His love-affair with Kristen Stewart, all the highs and lows of this relationship and the break-up a few months ago didn't help matters. And he knows it : "People saw me in a couple of movies and think this is who I am. It's natural. Now it's my responsibility to look for directors who I want to work with. I try to do it but I have to overcome my timidity. It happened to me a few days ago, I met one of my heroes at a dinner party. I texted him the next day saying I wanted to work with him. After 3 hours without hearing anything from him, I was on the verge of sending him another text like "I'm sorry, I'm sorry that was so presumptuous of me ". But he finally texted me back!".

Fragile like a young girl in love, Pattinson has that combination of passion and extreme lucidity that make his professional day to day life difficult. Once again, Cosmopolis and his first appearance at the Cannes Festival were a turn in his career: "I promised myself to only do what I wanted to do". Not really easy in the country of super-productions where the professionals were telling him to build himself an masculine public. "I don't even know what it means "building a masculine public" ! I can't force guys to go see my movies !" he says laughing. But the young actor he's not that naive and understood that being cool was the condition sine qua non in order for the independent filmmakers to take a interest in him. "In fact, it's marketing, and what's important in marketing is to be coherent. It means saying no to a lot of propositions. Of course, the risk in this business that is always evolving is to say no to projects until the moment when projects aren't sent your way anymore. "When that happens, I'll just go and do Dance with the stars".

For the time being, he is said to be playing in the next Werner Herzog movie with James Franco and Naomi Watts (he's not confirming anything) and he just finished filming The Rover, the first movie directed by David Michôd who wrote "Hesher" and "Animal Kingdom", a close friend of the Edgerton brothers. The gang it's good to be seen with to be accepted by the aficonados of independent movies in the US. He then will be reunited with his fairy godmother Cronenber in Maps to the Stars written by Bruce Wagner, a flagship figure of the new generation of American writers.

So, even if he likes to hide behind his geeky and tortured persona, Pattinson is not lacking determination and he's valiantly building a career that is beginning to look like him. After all, DiCaprio was also subjected to young girls shouting their admiration and Brad Pitt showed some abs in Thelma & Louise and even in several episodes of Dallas before David Fincher, Neil Jordan or Terry Gilliam gave him more substantial roles. Nobody blamed them for it. And we will forgive Rob Patz for playing in not so great movies. Especially since, laughing, he promises, under the gaze of his new Dior female colleagues to make an effort on the fashion side : "I like fashion but I'm not really comfortable with the idea of being judged by what I'm wearing so I'm always wearing the same clothes. But look, I have this Dior jacket that I was given and I wear it everyday!". It's never too late Rob. Let's hope that even with a impeccable look he will never lose his frankness. "A few months ago I started designing women dresses, couture dresses...". He burst out laughing. "I was certainly having a nervous breakdown!". Fragile, touching and irresistibly sexy despite himself. Pattinson, the teen idol, has become a man.

There's a shif in energy when a star of a certain status enters a building. You feel it when Kate Moss walks into a room - the atmosphere becomes oddly charged. And you sense it when Robert Pattinson is ten feet away, on the other side of a door in a Beverly Hills Hotel suite. Even though the hotel is a daily stop-off point for celebrities - Rachel Zoe is in the Polo Lounge today having lunch, in a large floppy hat; January Jones was in the lobby the previous night - Robert's presence has created a palpable current in the air. Trim, immaculate Parisian women from the house of Dior (he recently signed a deal to be the new face of Dior Homme Fragrance) wander up and down corridors, wielding clipboards looking prettily nervous. "Robert - 'e is ready, yes?" whispers one through the door as an inscrutable security guard nods me into the room that contains one of the most endlessly discussed movie stars of the decade.

The figure who gets up from the sofa doesn't carry himself with the self-entitlement of someone who commands $25 million a picture. Or like Edward Cullen, the mysterious, ethereal teenage vampire that handed Robert Pattinson fame on an almost unimaginable level. He's boyish and self-consciously polite as he shakes my hand, like a nervous, well brought-up adolescent meeting his girlfriend's parents for the first time. The hair that launched a thousand fansites is concealed today with a baseball cap worn back to front. He's wearing a soft, navy jumper, dark jeans and spotty socks with his black trainers - the uniform of the middle-class west London boy, strangely incongruous amidst all this LA affluence. It seems ridiculous to describe him as handsome. Of course he is - he's Robert Pattinson. But he's not beautiful in the pristine, toweringly confident way you expect of screen icons. More like a teenage boy who doesn't feel entirely comfortable with his aesthetic lottery win.

Pattinson famously doesn't like this part of the job - interviews and scrutiny - but there's no hostility in the room today, more the sense of a friendly young man at a wedding forced to sit next to an elderly relative, chuckling diplomatically at my jokes, connecting his thoughts with a lot of LA-inflected "kind of"s, "sorta"s and "like"s. He's sweet, surprisingly open and giggles a lot. Swigging Diet Coke and endlessly puffing away on electronic cigarettes, he chats about Dr Who ("I've never seen a episode. That's really bad isn't it?") and Game Of Thrones ("Everyone's obsessed by it. Crazy").

He knows a great deal about "crazy", having been catapulted to a level of fame that defied all expectation. A role in Harry Potter And The Goblet of Fire saw him heralded as "the next Jude Law". Then, in 2008, he beat 3000 others to land the lead role in the Twilight saga. His life was transformed.

These days fragrance campaigns have become a deliberate career move for A-list stars, who sign endorsements with big fashion houses for beautifully shot campaigns with reputable directors. And who better to represent your brand than the man at the centre of a movie franchise worth over three billion dollars? Clever Dior. The ads are impressively atmospheric, like a grainy, Warhol movie, shot against New York skylines by Nan Goldin with Robert running along rooftops and engaging in passionate clinches with a young French actress. He looks like a brooding James Dean. His hair had been cropped almost army regulation short.

"Initially I was going to shave it off. I wanted to have really short hair for it." He pauses thoughtfully. "I guess it was out of fear, really. You're doing an ad and you don't want it to look like you're posing." He's been offered big-money deals before of course, probably on a daily basis. It seems an unlikely move for someone so overtly private though, doing an ad campaign. So why now?

"Before, I was so obsessed with thinking, 'People are going to think you're a sell out,' and now of course, every single actor in the world has done one. In the past I always said no to everything, I thought I'd be so judged for it." What made him change his mind? "Dior came up and it felt right. It was a big decision - I've turned down plenty of others at the last minute before."

Of course he has. Twilight was not without its price. Pattinson lives under constant siege from paparazzi and frenzied fans, and his private life is debated on a daily basis. There is to be strictly no mention today of his high-profile split from Kristen Stewart, but I wonder if he feels the pay-off has been worth it? The franchise has, after all, given him the money and studio muscle in Hollywood to pick and choose what he does next.

"Kind of. It can be a really difficult transition from something like Twilight: once people identify you with something like that it's hard to find your way out of it. And also, I mean, I'm not that easy to cast because of my... physicality. I'm quite lanky. You can't exactly see me in a sports film or something, can you? I'm never going to play 'one of the guys'".

Surely he knows he's leading man material? "I don't know," he puffs on his electronic cigarette and laughs. "Maybe I have body dysmorphia." Does he see himself as good looking? He frowns. "It depends, sometimes. But I'm weird about my looks. Once you get photographed a lot it changes you. I remember when I first did Twilight I didn't care about how I looked - there was less pressure, I guess. I was like, 'I'm cool as shit!'" he laughs.

And now there's pressure in abundance. The night before I'd seen him at a Dior event in LA to launch the campaign. He'd arrived looking dashing in a navy suit and answered questions dutifully, but he seemed curiously shy for someone so used to being photographed and stared at.

"Every time I appear somewhere, I think, 'I don't know how many more times I can do this'. Dressing up to go somewhere and be looked at - I get so nervous. Up until the second I have to leave, I'll get changed a million times. It's crazy. Literally just before I go I look in the mirror and think, 'You look like shit'. I start worrying about wrinkles." He's 27. Really? "Honestly. Everyone who works with me knows they'll have to sit there and wait for me to go through my process of having my panic attack about how I look."

It's hard to decide whether he would have chosen this path had he known what he knows now. He was a middle class boy from an affluent west London suburb, the son of a model booker and businessman who fell into joining a local drama group as a teenger. And, as he point out, no one knew that Twilight was going to take off ("it was all so unexpected - the studios hadn't even bought the rights to the other books, so they ended up getting screwed over"). Actors like Daniel Craig and Matt Smith at least knew what they were signing up to, playing characters that inspire fan conventions and entire industries. Despite the success of the novels, no one could have predicted the feverish response to the Twilight movies.

No one had any idea. But it was good for me in a way, because I see people who sign up for huge movies and they don't have the opportunity to say, 'I didn't know this was going to happen'. This is my get out of jail free card," he smiles ruefully.

"It means I can say I can behave how I want because I just got here by accident. It makes it easier to say things like paparazzi piss me off. I can say that I didn't want that and I didn't know it was going to happen." It's the most emphatic he's sounded all morning, the one time he doesn't seem like a teenager.

Twilight was his launch pad but his other movie choices have been slightly more under-the-radar, often consciously chosen independent projects. He played Salvador Dali i low-budget Little Ashes, and starred alongside Reese Witherspoon in the commercially low-key Water For Elephants. He recetly finished filming Australian thriller The Rover with Guy Pearce, and reunited with director David Cronenberg this year for Maps To The Stars with Julianne Moore, a satire on Hollywood excess and celebrity culture - something he presumably has a great deal of insight into. It's his seconf time with Cronenberg who cast him in Cosmopolis, a critically acclaimed sci-fi drama that won a nomination for the Palme d'Or at Cannes last year. There's definite sense that Robert Pattinson wants to move on and grow up. He's doing a Johnny Depp.

"I got really lucky with Cosmopolis. I got it towatds the end of the Twilight movies and I felt it kind of legitimised me a bit." Did he feel he needed legitimising as an actor then? "Not that I'm putting any of the Twilight stuff down, but it's kind of..." he pauses carefully, fast-fowarding to how this might read in print and sensibly change tack. "It was more that it was so out of the blue getting a David Cronenberg movie and then getting to go to Cannes afterwards. It was like... massive, I guess." He adds: "I ever really felt like an actor before." Why not? "Because I just sort of fell into it. I mean, I knew I had quite good taste in films and I knew what I wanted to be in, but I don't think I really knew how to act. It felt like I was just figuring it out as I went along. With Cosmopolis I was like, 'OK, so I can actually do this other thing'. It's a struggle once you do teen moies: the bigger they are, the harder it's for people to allow themselves to see you in anything else, and it feels like a massive thing to overcome."

He's at pains to lead a relatively low-key life here in LA. The paparazzi photographs are still in plentiful supply, featuring him loading a ping-pong table on to his pick-up truck; buying groceries ("Robert Pattinson stocks up on toilet paper!" screamed one headline recently), but he shuns red-carpet events and publicity, andd hates Twitter: "That thing is a nightmate - why would I want to attract any more attention to myself?", and he seems to have the same group of friends he always had, notably Sienna Miller's partner, the actor Tom Sturridge, who he's known since childhood. Famous people always retrospectively say they had a sense of their own destiny - did he? Was he the school poster boy who everyone wanted to date, captain of the pretty team?

"No, I never hung out with the 'cool crowd,'" he says, aghast. "Actually, in my school, if you wanted to be in the cool crowd you had to go round and jack people's phones, so I wasn't part of that set. My little group of friends - who actually are still my little group of friends - and this sounds lame, be were artists really. We never got invited to the cool parties and if we did, we just stood in the corner on our own.

There's something slightly vulnerable about Robert Pattinson. He's an unusual candidate for the job of Hollywood movie star, where soundbites, media training and thick skins come with the territory. He strikes you as an introvert whos found he has a great talent doing an extrovert's job, and learning how to adapt. But what if he adapts too much? How does he stop becoming spoilt?

Because you see other people doing it all the time. It's so easy to go down that road and be a total dickhead. I remember working with this guy once. It was his first movie and we were three weeks in. He was having a conversation with someone and he'd just finished his waster bottle and was holding it out, waiting for someone to take it. I thought, 'You've been here three weeks!'"

"I guess maybe I'm too sensitive. I don't want people not to like me," he shrugs. "I actually find it difficult to ask people to do things for me. If you start bossing people around, they'll just take it, because they have to. Then they thing, 'OK, you've bossed me around, now I'm going to talk shit about you behind your back.'" We get on the subject of his nickname, R-Patz. He pulls a face - he's not keen. "I just don't understand that nickname. It's just so random. I don't think it's a term of endearment, either. It's just like..." He shrugs and holds out his hands in a gesture of bemused frustration. "You can't force people to respect you." He laughs. I guess... it's an odd little thing, is what it is."

He's fronting a fragance campaign so we inevitably discuss scent. I wonder what smells he likes on a woman? "You know, it's funny, but you can tell quite a lot about someone from the way they smell, don't you think?" I tell him I once dumped a guy because I didn't like his smell. "Exactly, it's weird. You can tell how good a person is, in a funny sort of way. People who are weird - I think they smell weird. It's like a totally animel thing. If someone's body scet reacts to you in a certain way, it can be amazing. It's massively powerful." I ask him how I smell. "I couldn't say," he laughs politely. I'm the elderly guest at the wedding again. "I don't know you very well." My embarrassing moment is relieved by one of the Parisian ladies telling me we've almost run out of time. "One more question," she says.

What would he like people to say about him? What would he like his legacy to be? "I don't know. I guess I'd wat them to say I'm a really good friend." He smiles. "Does that sound like I'm saying I'm the greatest person in the world?"

There's plenty of women out there who think he is. But perhaps he's juat a guy in a baseball cap, trying to give up smoking, who's doing his growing up in public. And I think he's making a pretty good job of it.

The Beverly Hills hotel is one of the most historic establishments in Hollywood, one of those places in which if you try, you can feel the ambiance and glamour of the golden age of American cinema. Amongst it’s pale pink columns – which have given it the name The Pink Palace – have eaten, slept and drank stars of the stature of Marylyn Monroe, Carey Grant, Grace Kelley, Lucille Ball or Elizabeth Taylor, to name a few. Even today, The Beverly Hills continues to me a main stop for the industry’s royalty and, since the best place to hide a tree is a forest, it is the best establishment to interview the paparazzi’s favorite prey of all of Los Angeles, Robert Pattinson. Dressed in jeans, sweater and a backwards baseball cap, he waits for us in a suite. Donning a scruffy beard he does not sparkle when the California sun illuminates his blue eyes. In fact, Robert looks less and less like a vampire abandoning high school and more like a mature actor seeking out roles with meaning. If you review his recent filmography, you’ll find smaller films – David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis – than blockbusters. His collaboration with Dior directed by Romain Garvais, represents one more step on his journey to adulthood. Ironically, the man whom the pressed dubbed the next Jude Law after his role in Harry Potter is substituting him as the face of Dior Homme fragrance. “Everyone is the new someone,” jokes Pattinson. "There are probably about three new me…” He laughs.

GQ: In the campaigns films you have some racy scenes with model Camille Rowe. Did she feel intimidated about being in bed with Robert Pattinson?
RP: No, I don’t think so. She was so… No, I don’t think so (laughs). And if she was, of course she didn’t show it (laughs).

GQ: And this doesn’t feel a bit disappointing?
RP: No, not at all. If you have to kiss someone you don’t know and that person keeps their distance or pulls away it’s horrible, it’s very cutting.

GQ: In Twilight you needed 4 films to have sex and in this one you have 30 seconds…It’s a fast forward
RP: Yes, that it is (laughs).

GQ: I suppose that’s what not being a teenager is about. You’ve said you’re beginning to feel like an adult. Why now, at 27 years?
RP: I don’t know, I think it’s the age. It’s strange, you start to change, childhood ends and suddenly you feel that your physical appearance is different, you feel heavier. When I see the photos from the campaign or my last film I feel with a very different look than what I’ve had in other things I’ve done, I look older, like an adult, as if before I was.. “oh lord! You’re like a kid faking it..” Yes, I think it’s the age.

GQ: It’s clear Twilight has changed your life. Did you ever think it would be so big?
RP: No, not at all, I lived in a tiny apartment when the premiere came and I didn’t know if we were going to do the sequels. Then the opening weekend came and it was like: “Oops, now we’re going to have to do the sequels.”

GQ: Did you dream with being a big star?
RP: No, not at all, I didn’t even think about being an actor.

GQ: What price have you had to pay for success?
RP: It’s strange, you can’t have a normal life. You spend a lot of time trying to fight it, but at the end you end up finding a new way to live. People don’t notice how lonely you are. In any case, I feel fortunate because I didn’t achieve success too young and I was at least able to have a life before.

GQ: While you filmed Little Ashes in Barcelona, I understand you invited a stalker to dinner…
RP: Yes, it’s true. It wasn’t that big a deal, it was strange, a bit boring.

GQ: You didn’t think she could be a psychopath?
RP: I can be a little psychopathic too (laughs). She’s the one that should have been scared of me (laughs).

GQ: Let me tell you that you portray yourself badly…
RP: Yes, I’m trying to fix that. Before I didn’t like appearing like I had a big ego, now I do. Now I have a big ego (laughs). I will never again pretend to be humble (uses evil voice).

GQ: Do you ever feel like you have to apologize for your success?
RP: When you become famous, it’s so easy for people to hate you just because you are famous. …So you try to beat yourself up so others can’t.

Rob: I hope it doesn’t bother you that I smoke?

Interviewer: What do you smoke?
My e-cigs. I’ve been trying to quit for quite some time now but this one here is pretty unique: each cigarette can be smoked for as long as it would take you to finish to packs of cigs. And, um, if it stops glowing, you just throw it away. Just like with real cigarettes. I like that. Do you want one?

Sure.
And?

I like everything that smokes.
These are extremely strong. I constantly drive to 7-Eleven and get new ones. You can even smoke these things on the airplane. Oh God, I sound like a salesman for e-cigs.

When you should be doing some promo for Dior. How does it feel to be the new face of Dior Homme?
Actually, I never wanted to do advertisements.

…and then one morning you ran out of perfume?
I don’t use perfume!

Are you allowed to say that?
When I was 13 or 14 I always used perfume, but today, not anymore. At the time I probably thought it would give me some kind of adult touch. So it was important, until the first stubble appeared.

The director Romain Gavras just said you would have crashed the BMW while shooting.
what? We agreed he wouldn’t say anything! And I didn’t even total the car..

What happened?
I was supposed to drive along a six meter long (ca. 19,5 feet) stripe of sand 100km/h (ca. 60 mp/h) while at the same time, the waves came in, and I just slipped. After that the car, the models, and I drowned in mud full of algae.

Did you confess that to your dad?
Because of the models? No, why?

I thought you father dealt with oldtimers.
Oh, shit, that’s right. I had hoped the BMW wouldn’t be considered old. By the way, after the first Twilight movie, I drove the same model in black. The car didn’t cost more than 1000 bucks - it didn’t make it very long but it’s considered a classic today. Thank God, dad is retired by now.

The scene where it looks like you and the model would smoke pot, that wasn’t the one you were shooting just before that one, was it?
No, I didn’t. (laughs)

Did Roman Gavras had to do a lot of editing until the pictures fit with the public image of Dior?
Well, the joint wasn’t real.

The girl was, however.
Maybe there will be a director’s cut one day, one in which the audience is allowed to see her breasts. Oh, no, I take that back - what a horrible comment to make.

After all, the audience loves to see you a lot more than the naked girl.
Pff.

Ever since you played the young Salvador Dali in Little Ashes you are constantly seen naked in front of the camera. Is that something that is unproblematic for you?
I’m English! No! Although, by now, it’s okay, at least if I feel like I worked out enough. But even then it’s more difficult for me than others on set. Just imagine meeting Juliette Binoche for the first time and ten minutes later you’re supposed to shot a sex scene with her. That’s brutal. With the Dali production in Spain it was really bad, almost embarrassing: we hung out at a swimming pool and were supposed to loosen up a little. I clang to the edge of the pool and before I was even able to turn around the Spanish guy was already naked. He happily swam over to me and I had no idea what to do. I felt like Mr. Bean. However, that was the first sex scene I had ever done. And it was with a man.

Does that make a difference?
Looking back, I can actually say no. You don’t really kiss, actually you only make sure that is looks good, you know, whether the angle is right, and if you look good doing it.

Really?
Well, at least it feels different than a normal kiss.

Only a few people are being filmed while kissing.

Back to your part-time job: do you feel like an Homme or would Dior Boy have worked better for you?
Well, during the shoot Romain always yelled “More Homme!” and “Robert, be an Homme!”

Your predecessor was Jude Law. It seems like the French consider the English more Homme than their fellow countrymen.
Funny, right? Us Brits are especially manly, educated, eloquent, and good looking.

And you have a lot more hair than Jude Law.
How mean!

During your time in Hogwards it was probably always “That boy a year above Harry Potter is going to be the new Jude Law.”
Yes, that is what was written in the newspapers. But today, there are dozens of young guys who are celebrated as the new Robert Pattinson.

Two weeks ago, some photos appeared where they simply put your head on Jude Law’s head from the photos of his campaign.
That’s crazy. (laughs)

Have you ever met Jude Law?
Unfortunately not. But I’m sure that he probably laughs about stunts like that. We’re English. We have a good sense of humor. It’s what’s protecting us from all the craziness that happens.

When it comes to that you reached a complete new level in the last twelve months.
In the last twelve months? (laughs) It was hysterical, yes, but that’s actually what is was always like, during all the Twilight years. Suddenly everywhere I went people thought they already knew me. They look at a photo of me and think they have a special relationship, a friendship, an affair with me - someone they haven’t met their whole life. That’s crazy. And in some moments really scary and creepy. But I try to laugh it off. Only if you’re able to laugh about stuff is it that you can digest things. Maybe this whole celebrity thing, this hysteria that can hardly get any bigger than it already is, will be over real soon. At least that’s what I hope will happen.

When and more importantly why should that happen?
Oh, maybe in ten or twenty years; once the economic crisis is over and people are able to focus on themselves and their consumption - and not clutter the internet out of boredom the whole day and write complete nonsense about others.

Are you talking about yourself or the general need for fans to get close to famous people?
In general. The internet changed a lot. If you google something long enough you will soon know everything there is to know about me: what I eat, what my poop looks like, with whom I’m sleeping, what my dick looks like, even what I look like when I masturbate…

Really?
Well, that might be a little exaggerated. But my hand-job face is recorded for eternity.

Ever since you played the young Dali.
Right.

Can one not simply pretend to do it?
Try it. I can tell you right now, no chance. It just doesn’t work. So I rubbed one out in front of the camera.

Because you hoped no one would ever see the film?
Something like that, yes. After the end of the shooting I thought for a couple of days that this would be the end of my - at the time really short - acting career. But then I got the phone call that said “You got the role.” And then Twilight started.

And after the first part of Twilight the sell???
Haha.

Mr. Pattinson, you grew up in Barnes, in the south west of London. What was your childhood like?
Pretty normal. I have always been an average guy who constantly made sure not to be the center of attention. A little bit shy and unsure. That’s why I decided to sign up for the theater group, even though I had already played at a theater before I did that.

Your father repaired expensive cars. Your mother worked in a modeling agency. You yourself modeled during high school.
I’m proud to say to have had the most pathetic modeling career in the world.

For that you’re doing a pretty good job with Dior.
In the beginning it was okay. I was tall and looked like a girl. It worked because this androgynous look was in at the time. But then I got older and more masculine - and just like that no one booked me anymore.

Your female class mates were probably impressed by your modeling, weren’t they?
No, not really. I tried to keep my part-time job a secret. I guess I have always been a private person. There was actually only one incident that everyone at school knew about: I modeled for this teen magazine, Bliss, and they had the Bliss Boys. In every issue the girls were able to vote their guys in or out. I was pretty good and was voted in for a year or so - which was probably because I called and voted for myself. Per issue you were given 150 Pounds (laughs). If I think about it now, that was by far my most successful model job. I only ever went to the casting to see female models. But I never dared talking to them.

But in school you haven’t been shy enough to not put red roses in lockers at Valentine’s Day.
How do you know that?

From the young girl with the locker.
Wow. Did she also tell you that the thing with the rose didn’t work? It was Valentine’s Day, we were 13 or so, anyway, I put the rose in her locker and - my best friend said he did it. A week later he was dating her. As I already said, I wasn’t very lucky at the time.

Says the vampire for whose roses millions of girls are waiting for.
That sounds easier than it is.

Were you sad on the last day of shooting Twilight? After all, Edward was with you for years.
There have been so many last days of shooting. One of them was in the Caribbean, on Saint Thomas, that was fantastic. Most of the time we shot during bad weather. But there the sun was shining, we were at the beach and made out in the sea the whole time.

Sounds good.
The actual last day of filming had been in Canada. And that was the whole opposite of that day [in the Caribbean]: all we did for two weeks was shooting scenes in which we were naked; so that [last] night it was freezing cold and horrible. The whole crew just wanted to go. Just like me. I didn’t even say goodbye to all the guys but just took off.

In an interview you once said “Most people only take but give nothing in return.” The simple question is: what is it that Robert Pattinson has to give? The more interesting question, however, would be: what was it that you have taken lately?
If you say “take” I immediately think of stealing.

Interesting.
I always steal the pens in the hotel rooms. Look: my backpack is full of it.

You live in way too many hotels.
Sad but true.

What do your friends from London say about R-Patz, the nickname the yellow press gave you?
Fortunately they ignore it. Just like Twilight. But regarding R-Patz: I’d like to strangle the guy who came up with it!

Do you know who the father of the fighting name R-Patz is?
No. Well, actually I do. Some fat celebrity blogger… let’s just leave it at that.

Do you believe that, what is being reported about your relationship with Kristen Stewart would have been just as hysterical if there had been no Twilight romance?
It’s impossible to give a smart answer to that. One thing can’t be separated from the other.

Very diplomatic.
Well, what am I supposed to say?

Thanks to social networks and the Twilight hysteria you have more fans than Justin Bieber, more than any other popstar of our time.
The real odd thing about this Twilight target group is that they aren’t really teenagers. Most of them are older. Twilight has its own parallel world, its own fan culture that has been forming on the net since day one. And in an intense way that has never existed before. Sometimes I ask myself what these masses of people do the whole day. They sit in front of their computers and comment on anything having even remotely to do with Twilight. Day and Night. So actually really exciting - at least up to point when I became part of that phenomenon.

How do you deal with that?
You learn to adapt. And you learn to live our life a different way. What’s really crass, however, is if 75% of the Internet pack think your absolute shit. (laughs)

Do you ever think of escaping?
Who doesn’t? The real nuisance are not some fans but the paparazzi - those on the other hand you can find stupid; even though I understand them, too: a single photo of me, taken at morning of any day pays the monthly rent for the paparazzo. For them all the pathetic waiting is really worth it.

Did you know what you got yourself involved in with Twilight?
Not in the slightest. But now that it’s all over I feel a lot more grown up.

Rumor has it that you took a valium right before the casting for Twilight, the role that changed your life. Can you remember that?
Yup, and the pill really worked it’s magic - if only that one time. After I knew I got the role I thought Valium would be my thing, like the magic drug that gets me through all these horrible castings.

And?
At the next casting I almost fell asleep. Thank God I only had to do castings twice since Twilight.

One being with Werner Herzog with whom you’ll be doing your next film.
I didn’t have to read for Werner, I was just lucky.

For Werner Herzog you play H. P. Lovecraft. You’ll be shooting in Morocco.
Right.

Isn’t the desert sun deadly for vampires?
Very funny. By the way I think the smell of blood is disgusting.

Right after the last part of Twilight you shot Cosmopolis with David Cronenberg. You play an investment banker…
The timing was just amazing. David sent me the script, I was thrilled, I accepted the role right away - and then, while shooting, the global Occupy movement started. And please, believe me: I can more than understand why people went out on the streets! Did you know that even in L.A. there was any Occupy movement?


No
There really was.

Did you demonstrate?
That would be ridiculous. What was I supposed to say that wouldn’t have sounded dishonest? But I actually know some well-known actors who went there. I thought that was simply pathetic.

Why?
Because the lovely colleagues just got into their Audis or BMW’s for which they didn’t pay a single dime, drove downtown, parked their car a block away, and pretended to have come by train. I also don’t understand what they actually wanted to do there. I said to them: “You simply ruin this protest of real demonstrators. No matter how much you can sympathize with them: it’s not your fight. You are not wanted there.”

Do you like living in L.A.?
Well, at least it’s a very comfortable way of living. The sun is shining almost every morning - and if I don’t want to be bothered I simply put on a sweater, wear a base cap and glasses, get in my car and drive off. That’s one of my ways of getting out and letting go.

The bars in this city already close by 2am - not really ideal for a man who wants to drown his heart break in alcohol.
You have no idea how drunk you can get till 2am!

What’s the best thing about L.A.?
The roasted onions on and In-N-Out cheeseburger. That’s the real odor of L.A. That’s what I miss the most when I’m gone!

Do you feel lonely when the cameras are off and you close the doors behind you?
Not just then.

People say, you have only hired a press agent since your break-up with Kristen Stewart because you didn’t see a sense in paying someone to do just that before then.
I’m cheap. And I still have no press agent. Why should I?

And with whom do you talk about things, especially with regards to how to handle the paparazzi?
With my family. And my agent.

On whose couch you used to like to sleep.
I wouldn’t say like. I lived on this couch for three years. My agent worked while I was hanging around her apartment and played Playstation. A wonderful time - until one morning I got the call about Twilight… Do you want another e-cig? You know, just take a few with you!

THE MAGNETIC SEX APPEAL OF ROBERT PATTINSON

He has one of the most magnetic looks of current cinema. Free from his vampiric past, the actor writes the first chapters of his new life, next to Dior Homme, turning into an icon of freedom.
Robert Pattinson says he's not the perfect man, but he's very close. His millions of fans believe so, and after seeing him in the new Dior Homme ad, so do we. Discreet and misterious, Pattinson (London, 1986) is still the same he's always been in spite of the fame he got with The Twilight Saga. Since then, his CV grows in an unstoppable way with titles like Water for Elephants, Bel Ami and David Cronenberg's Cosmopolis. We'll soon see him in The Rover, and he starts filming: Maps to the Stars, again with Cronenberg and Hold on to Me, with actress Carey Mulligan. Used to living with the rumors of his break up with Kristen Stewart, he feels grown up for the first time. In Los Angeles and in a Glamour Exclusive, he confesses that he's a one-woman man. As said before: almost perfect.

What made you accept to being the new face of the Maison Dior?
It was a combination of circumstances. When it was proposed to me, I was filming very small movies and I thought representing a brand like Dior would allow me to get to the public more. It's good to have a big company as an ally. Being the face of a brand is something I've doubted a lot. I've turned down offers in the past, but when the french campaign proposed it to me, the decision was easy. I like what the brand represents. I like it because it's inaccessible and I relate to its philosophy.

Do you miss the media attention the Twilight Saga caused?
No, although I do have new found feelings. On one side, the popularity made me face the pressure of the media, but on the other side, I felt safe being part of a saga so profitable.

Do you mean Twilight gave you economical support that now allows you to freely choose low budget cinematic projects?
Yeah, that's what I mean. Twilight has given value to my image all over the world. Before I star in a romantic comedy, I'd rather turn into the face of a strong firm. It's something that in reality, I could've done earlier, but I've waited because I wanted to team with a good brand. Two years ago, when I began considering the idea of being the face of a perfume, nobody was doing it. Now all actors do it, from Brad Pitt to Matthew McConaughey. It's fun that we're all doing it now.

Originally, the story of the advert (directed by Romain Gavras) was going to be of two men and one woman, but you decided to change the script...
A lot of people thought we were going to have an orgy. Certain images were cut because there was nakedness and we don't want to give the wrong ideas.

But if you start allowing yourself to be seen surrounded by models, a lot of people will expect you to do exactly what's expected of the sexy actor of the moment...
There's a very precise line that marks reality and fiction. If people aren't capable of distinguishing it, there's nothing I can do to explain it to them.

You said becoming the face of Dior makes you feel adult. Do you feel that at 27, you've lost your innocence?
I don't know. I feel less self-conscious now. Up until now I saw myself as a teenager, and for a few months now I haven't felt so immature.

Has letting go of Twilight and everything that surrounds it contributed to your maturity?
I don't know, with Twilight I turned into a public persona and my ego had to face a lot of things. I don't like calling attention, or that people hug me and take pictures of me. Twilight made me change. However, for the last eight or nine months, I feel a lot more comfortable under my skin.

The new promotional images of the ad come with James Dean quotes. They sound very good, but they become exahusting, "Live every day as if it were your last", for example-
That's how I live. If I had to die tomorrow, I'd feel content with what I've achieved. I'm not a very ambitious person.

Another James Dean jewel is "Forgive quickly", is it easy for you to forgive?
*Sighs* I'm good at forgiving myself.

Do you have to forget to forgive or are you capable of forgiving generously?
I think I'm capable of forgiving without further ado. But at the moment, I don't feel the need to forgive anyone. There's nothing that really bothers me.

The Dior ad speaks of independence and the sex appeal of a one-woman man, is that how you see yourself?
I don't know how I see myself, that perception changes every day. The ad represents a couple that lives their relationship with such intensity that in the end, they're incapable to keep it. But it's not real...

Have you ever snuck into a party?
Into many, continuously. I never get invited to parties, I always have to sneak in *laughs*.

How do you fight boredom?
For a long time I've been so afraid to show up in public that I stayed at home doing nothing. It came to a point where I couldn't hide anymore, so I decided to change. I've never minded, because I like spending time alone, but I have more confidence in my self.

Do you still write and compose?
Yeah, I've been composing lately. Trying to develop the scripts of two movies and writing. One of the films I'll be in, I can't say much about the other one. It's funny, I like to write the characters as if it was a woman and then playing them.

Why do you think that happens?
I suppose it's because female emotions are a bit more complex than male ones.

Do you think you're the perfect man?
*Laughs* Not at all. I'm very, very far from being that.

Do you worry about dressing well? Is clothing important to you when you define your image?
Of course. I think shoes are very important, because even if they're nice, if I don't feel comfortable wearing them, it ruins the whole ensemble. In the perfume ad, I'm wearing my own clothes.

Really? We thought it was Dior.
All the tshirts in the ad are mine. It always happens, I always end up wearing something of mine.

Your image projects a lot of elegance, something like the British charm, how do you manage that?
I'm very squared and a little maniac. I find it very difficult to find clothes that captivate me. I don't want to pretend to be someone I'm not and getting it wrong; the wrong suit, shoes or shirt can ruin everything. I like dressing elegant but always comfortable.

Is there any fragrance or smell that helps awaken your emotional memories?
Yeah. The smell of breakfast. Bacon, coffee, toast... it remids me of family sundays at home. Bacon and marmite.

Would you like to shoot a superhero film?
I don't know, I have no abs... I'm missing the six pack! I don't think I'd dare to sign a contract in that kind of proejct, which usually includes various films. I'm still learning what I want to achieve in my career as an actor.

Back to your abs, you're not one of the guys that sells himself without a shirt. Gym must not be your thing, you haven't even been caught at the beach...
I hate going to the gym. Now that I'm getting older who knows, I might sign up, but I know I'd only last two weeks. About the beach, to be honest I don't really like taking my shirt off, I'd rather get drunk *laughs*.

Since we interviewed you for Harry Potter, you keep the same humbleness. Haven't you changed during these years?
I'm still a very shy and tremendously insecure guy. In reality, I've never been interested in following the path of egomaniacs.

"My favorite stories are the dark ones, where there's no hope"

He's given a turn in his life. He's broken up with Kristen Stewart and focused on his career. Now he only does auteur films. The actor and new face of Dior talks to S Moda exclusively.

He didn’t put the audience in his pocket. Neither did he understand it. But he did wake up a very feminine instinct: the maternal one. That was not Robert Pattinson’s night. The british 27 year old, got up on the stage of the Soho House, a private Los Angeles club, to talk about his first luxury firm: Dior. Around 30 international media, including this magazine, had attended the premiere of 1000 Lives, the commercial for Dior Homme that Pattinson stars in (online at dior.com on September 1). “I am incapable of seeing an audience as such. In my eyes they’re all individuals and in my head I try to have a conversation with each of them. That’s impossible.” He apologizes the next day sitting on a couch in the Beverly Hills Hotel.

The actor recovers his confidence. Goodbye to shyness. And out of place laughter. During face to face, Pattinson –with beard, a hat, jeans and tshirt – measures time and words. And he inspires instinct very different to the maternal ones.

He doesn’t like to talk about his private life, or his earlier years as a model. His purpose: to build a solid career, leaving behind the labels of it boy and mass phenomenon, “If I could go to Cannes every year, I’d be fine with lower income. I’d like all of my movies to go through that festival.” He assures us. And he’s serious. His first attempts after the Twilight Saga were: Water for Elephants (2011) and Bel Ami (2012), they didn’t rescue him from the mainstream circuit. However, Cosmopolis (2012), David Cronenberg’s film, did. “It was nothing like anything I’d done before, and I loved that.” He admits. What’s coming is even better. Mission: Blacklist (Jasper Granslandt), The Rover (David Michod), Queen of the Desert (W. Herzog) and Maps to the Stars, Cronenberg’s upcoming film. “It’s more accessible than Cosmopolis, although not as much as A History of Violence. The script is dark. I find it funny, but you have to have a very unique sense of humor to see it that way: it’s not a comedy.”

His ability to capture irony is probably, in part, because of his English roots. Pattinson grew up in Barnes, southwest of London. When he was a kid, his sisters dressed him up as a girl. His appearance – a bit feminine, then- didin’t distune. Little of that is left – blue eyes, framed by never-ending lashes and certain delicacy. But a lot of his modeling past. His mother, model agent, introduced him to it and Robert posed until he was 16 years old. Then he got a worm for acting and since his role in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), he hasn’t stopped. Critics agree, he’s not just a pretty face.

One of your upcoming projects is ‘Queen of the Dessert’ by Werner Herzog. Are you only interested in auteur filmmaking? (Note: there is no proper translation for this question, by auteur filmmaking, it refers to films where the director plays a huge part in the writing process, normally his own scripts)
I want to work with geniuses. I’m trying to recreate my favorite film list from when I was seventeen. I met Werner, we talked, and two weeks later he offered me the role of Lawrence of Arabia. We start shooting at the end of this year.

You didn’t have many releases in 2013. But its raining roles for you. For The Rover, a modern western, you spent two months in an Australian town covered in dust, sweating and surrounded by flies. It’s not a very encouraging setting.
We shot in the dessert. My character breaks his teeth, bleeds, gets spread with mud. On set, nobody made an effort to look hot, just the opposite from Twilight. I’d never been in a film without my shirt on because I’m embarrassed, but in this one, I barely ever have it on.

That’s a step...
Yeah! From now on, I’m never wearing one!

Fans must be sad now that you cut your hair.
It was a distinctive symbol. But it was because of laziness. I didn’t go to the barber’s because I didn’t want to pay for a haircut. I just fixed it when I had to do a movie.

So, you don't take care of himself?
I need to do it more. Just yesterday I was thinking of wrinkles and grey hairs.


He doesn’t hide them, Pattinson makes an effort to look less handsome. He’s like Brad Pitt in that aspect. And for Nan Goldin, the photographer of the Dior Homme campaign, it’s perfect. The artist, famous for photographing the dark sides of life, stresses his asymmetrical features and makes him look older.

Yesterday, at the press conference, you admitted to feeling adult. In what way?
It’s a feeling that started eight months ago, when I turned 27. I’ve been taking adult decisions for years now. I would ask my parents for advice but they didn’t know what to tell me. Fortunately, I’m more comfortable now.

You played Edward Cullen in five films, enough to feel affection. Was it hard saying goodbye to the vampire and the saga’s stability?
I couldn’t have filmed another one. It got harder each time and I felt like I was repeating myself.

How do you deal with prejudice? Making films for teenagers gets you typecast, they think you’re less smart.
Actors that build a career after a franchise are usually smart. A project like Twilight indicates: it’s not only about keeping up work, it’s about not losing your head. Edward was young, he went to High School. People thought I was, too, but really I was 21.

You don’t like talking about your private life. But you’re a teen phenomenon, you represent a global brand. How do you deal with stardom?
Life is decisions. I chose this job, and at the same time, I set out not to mix personal and professional. That has allowed me not to obsess: I don’t pretend for media and the public to really know me. If I did, I’d go crazy.

You don’t use lotions. But you like to shop and create styles, you created Edward's in Twilight.
Filming was in Canada, and it was set behind two weeks, I had nothing to do so I went shopping. But I had no money. I sent pictures with the clothes that I wanted with texts like “I think Edward should wear these jeans”. Many made it and the studio bought my clothes!

In the Dior ad, your style reminds to those of Jean-Paul Belmondo’s and Steve McQueen’s. Do you like its aesthetics?
I’m very practical; I go for basic clothing, what you can wear for a straight week. Fragrance adverts tend to be perfect and we were looking for tough aesthetics. For the shooting, we had many options, but I was bent on wearing the same thing all the time. I ended up ruining a jacket. And I skipped codes: I was wearing a t-shirt beneath a shirt. I saw it as very 50’s, very masculine. Yet, in France that’s unsightly, the opposite of chic.

Surly it’ll become a trend. Are those your favorite decades, the 50’s and 60’s?
Yeah. I really like their practical spirit. A lot of suits looked like uniforms. I’m not an advocate of triviality.

Once you said you’d rather spend 10 years with a girl rather than 10 minutes.
I still think the same, but it depends on the person.

You’ve been very involved in the Dior ad. If you directed or produced a film, what genre would it be?
My perspective as a director is very different: I dream of shooting a big budget film. A science fiction one.

Your favorite movie of this kind?
Blade Runner and Star Wars. I love science fiction, I love how it creates universes. When you’re a kid and you watch The Empire Strikes Back, you identify with the characters, you believe you are one of them even when the movie is finished. It’s fascinating. I, for example, still want Star Wars toys. If somebody gave me a laser sword for my birthday, I’d flip.

Now that I see you in a hat. I think you had a rap group at school.
[Laughs] Yes. I went to private school and my friends and I played every day. I was obsessed; I wrote rap songs in class. From fifteen to seventeen, I took it very seriously. I still like it, I’d like to record an album.

A lot of your films are based on books, do you like literature?
I used to read a lot. But my focus has gotten worse. My favorites are Russian authors and dark stories where there’s no hope.

So, are you nostalgic or pessimistic?
No. I don’t know why I like those types of stories. But I do. I re-read Dublineses by James Joyce the other day. I gave A Painful Case, my favorite story, to a friend. He said it was the most depressing thing he’d read in his life. I love it. There’s something in those stories that allows me to connect with myself and that makes me happy.
